Yorkshire players enjoyed some success at the North of England Masters Tournament held at Pontefract Squash Club on 2-4 January. Jonathan Lilley won the Mens Over 45 with a virtuoso display of racket skill in a 3-0 victory. Murray Scott, a Yorkshireman by birth although now playing for Derbyshire), beat Ray Burke (Leyburn) in the Mens Over 50s. In the Over 70s, Mike Clemson (Ferriby Hall) beat fellow Yorkshireman and current World Champion Adrian Wright 3-2 after saving a match ball in the fourth. In the Womens Over 45, Andrea Santamaria (Pontefract) was runner up, and in the Over 55 Julie Field (also of Pontefract) went one better by winning the event. Yorkshire also had finalists in the various Plate events – Andy Wood, Prem Sispal and Fred Harrison. The support and facilities provided by Pontefract Squash Club were appreciated by all the 140 participants, who travelled from all over England for the event, one of a series which carries ranking points for selection for the various age group England teams which play in the Home Internationals at the end of the season.
