The new men’s Yorkshire Champion is 16-year-old James Peach of Doncaster. James was a deserved winner, overcoming Ed Shannon (York) and Alex Hodgetts (Pontefract) in the early rounds before facing the holder, Adam Taylor (Pontefract), in the final. Adam had had an energy-sapping semi-final against Niall McKinnon (Chapel Allerton) which lasted 53 minutes and ended 14-12 in the 5th. James was too strong, and too fresh, in the final, winning 12/10 11/8 11/5 in 26 minutes. He picked up a winner’s cheque of £120 for his efforts.
In the ladies competition, Katie Smith (Pontefract) retained her title, beating Nicky Horn (York) and Hannah Shipley (Pontefract) in a round robin. Nicky had threatened to cause an upset at one stage, winning the 3rd game against Katie 12-10, but the holder held on, despite a lack of recent matches, to take the 4th 11/9 and win the title.
The B event was very competitive but Jonathan Lilley, at 47 a little older than James, was the outstanding player throughout. He beat Richard Briggs (Barnsley) 15/7 15/7 15/10 in the 24 minute final.
In the plate, Nick Bond (Chapel Allerton) beat Lewis Briggs (Barnsley) 3-1 in an entertaining final.
