Yorkshire WO40 team played their Stage 2 match at Shrewsbury at the weekend, having gained 35 points from Stage 1 which had been hosted at Pontefract. The team was made up of Andrea Santamaria and Julie Field (Pontefract), Diane Fenwick (York RI), Paula Arrowsmith (Chapel A) and Sarah Percy (Wakefield)
Meeting the hosts, Shropshire, first the team made an excellent start winning 4-1. The only winner from Shropshire was their young number 1, Linda Pritchard. The balance of the match swung first to one player, then the other. Andrea had very nearly given herself concussion on a ‘lights box’ just outside the court and lost the first couple of games but composed her game and won the next two more easily. The final game was Shropshire’s in the end.
Lancashire had travelled down with 4 players so Sarah had a w/o at 5th string and Julie was on and off court in record time, Shelley Walsh pulling a calf muscle in the first rally. Paula faced the powerful Mandy Warren whose boasts were used to good effect on the rather dead courts, so 2nd string to Lancashire.
Andrea again got her maximum time on court beating Jeannine Cowie in the fifth game. With 2 ties under their belt Yorkshire gained another 36 points to take them through to the Finals which will be hosted at Coolhurst Squash Club on March 5-6.
Shropshire finished on 17 points and Lancashire on 12.
