England junior James Peach retained his title at the Italik Yorkshire Closed Squash Championships at Pontefract last weekend, while Hannah Shipley took her first ladies title.
James took the title in a gruelling match with Taminder Gata-Aura which went to five games, with James prevailing 11-8 in the 5th. Taminder had earlier beaten fellow-Pontefract player Alex Hodgetts 3-0 in the semi final, while also James overcame the 2013 champion Adam Taylor 3-0. The game of the earlier rounds saw Taminder narrowly beat Tom Bamford, who served for the match in the 5th. Another England junior, Jack Cooper, won the plate.
While there was a small entry for the ladies competition, the games were fierce, with Hannah Shipley showing strong form to defeat Andrea Santamaria 3-2.
The B title went for a second year to Wakefield player Richard Briggs, who beat Rothwell’s Richard Grayson 3-1. Yorkshire under 15 player Ben Sockett won the plate.
Many thanks go to our sponsor, Italik, for their generous contribution to the prize fund, to the Pontefract club for hosting and to all the players who took part in the right spirit.
