Men O60s find going tough

On the Saturday, Yorkshire were to play the holders Surrey in the semi final. Perter Hall had confirmed earlier in the week that due to a family situation he would be unable to play so the team was Mark Thompson, Steve Williams and brought to play at 3 was Roy Robinson who had played in the group stage. When the Surrey team was announced, the previous number 1 was now down at 3 string with 2 ‘better’ players in at both 1 and 2 string so this was always going to be difficult.

At 3 string Roy played Steve Jackson, Roy never really got into the first game and with the confidence the Surrey player never gave Roy any easy points, final score 9/0, 9/3, 9/3.

At 1 string Mark Thompson played Paul Etkins, first game very tight with good movement from both payers, but Surrey edged the game 9/5, second game went to Yorkshire at 9/6, into the third game and Surrey dominated the score and won 9/1, into the forth game and Surrey led 6- 0 and then Yorkshire fought back to lead 8-6 then it became 8-8, Surrey edged 9-8 but again score became 9-9 and then Yorkshire won the final point 10 – 9 and into a decider. The final game was dominated again by the Surrey player, final score 9/5, 6/9, 9/1, 9/10, 9/1 after 48 mins.

At 2 string, Steve Williams came up against a very good shot player and whilst the first game was close, the Surrey player then played his shots to win 3 – 0, final score 9/6, 9/3, 9/2.

In the other semi final Buckinghamshire beat Cumbria 2 – 1 so the play off was then between Cumbria and Yorkshire on the Sunday.

At 3 string Roy again did not start well but gradually got into the match, he lost the first game 9/1, had a chance to win the second game but faltered at the end and lost 9/7. He stormed back to win the third playing his usual flowing shots and in the forth was ahead but the Cumbria player steadied and took a tight game, final scores 9/1, 9/7, 6/9, 10/8. Game to Cumbria.

At 1 string this became another battle, Yorkshire ahead in the first game 8-6 only for the Cumbria player to play some very tight shots and win the game 10 – 8. Second game Yorkshire rallied and won 9- 6. Into the third game and Cumbria edged this 9-5 and in the forth game very close throughout but finally Yorkshire won 10-8. Into the decider and Yorkshire managed to win 9-2, final score 10/8, 6/9, 9/5, 8/10, 2/9. Game to Yorkshire.

At 2 string Steve Williams came across another good player, very close in the first game edged by Cumbria 9-7, second game tight, Cumbria won 9-6 then Steve found his rhythm and won the third 9-5 but the Cumbria player held just enough in reserve and in the forth game ran out 9-3, final scores 9/7, 9/6, 5/9, 9/3. Game to Cumbria.

Final results – Surrey champions beating Buckinhamshire 3 – 0.
3rd/4th play off – Cumbria beat Yorkshire 2 – 1.
