The Yorkshire Masters Over 50 Championships on Saturday 4th October at Abbeydale, writes Stephen Blacksell. The 8 dwindled to 5 in the end as a result of various strains, twinges, breakdowns in communication, and other legitimate reasons. The 5 were Les Hughes, Phil Wakefield, Steve Jones, Prem Sispal and Stephen Blacksell.
We adopted a league format playing best of 3 HiHo with everyone playing everyone else. Prem was out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and won comfortably against Blacksell and then gave the full time professional, Wakefield, a scare before Wakefield crept in 2-1. Les Hughes was clearly still in driving mode having come from Harrogate via Ilkley and lost the first to Jones who had barely come out of the blocks at all in his first match against Wakefield. But Hughes got his eye in with some good boasts and hauled himself past Jones 2-1. Jones overcame the fading Sispal, Blacksell was the whipping boy, and Hughes and Wakefield went unbeaten leaving them to fight it out in the decider.
By mutual agreement the decider switched to PAR to 11 over best of 5 with Hughes taking the first 14-12. He hit cruise mode in the second taking that 11-3 before the gritty Barnsleyite pulled the third back 11-9. However, Hughes wasn’t to be denied and stormed ahead in the fourth to take that 11-4 and the match 3-1.
So the Yorkshire Closed champion 2014 -2015 is Les Hughes from North Yorkshire.
Congratulations to Les, and thanks to Abbeydale Squash and Neil Guirey for use of the Courts and facilities. Thanks also to Abbeydale Park for the refreshments and excellent sandwiches.
Next event is the inter-county weekend at Hallamshire on 1st and 2nd November where we host against Durham and Cleveland, Lancashire and Suffolk.
