Pontefract Squash Club was the venue for Stage 2 of the Women’s Inter County Championships last weekend. The Yorkshire 2nd team were keen to maintain their position in Division 1 having gained promotion last season. The team got off to a good start with a 3-2 win over Nottinghamshire with wins from Katie Smith (Pontefract), Claire Walker (Chapel Allerton) and Andrea Santamaria (Pontefract). They followed this with victory over Merseyside gaining maximum 20 points, all the team of Katie, Claire, Andrea and Hannah Shipley (Pontefract) and newcomer Nicola Beachill (Pontefract) winning 3-0.
Sunday morning and the team faced a strong Northumbria side, who were determined to regain their place in the Premier Division. Northumbria had already comprehensively beaten Nottinghamshire and Merseyside 5-0 on Saturday and they continued with a 4-1 victory over Yorkshire. Yorkshire’s player of the match was Andrea who came back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Sarah Bowles at 3rd string.

The ladies 1st team will be playing the Premier Division Finals weekend on May 2-4 at Wimbledon.
Yorkshire ladies O40 and O50 teams were most unlucky to miss out on a place in both finals by the narrowest of margins, having held the titles for the last 2 seasons.
