Junior inter-county 2nd teams make good start

This season saw 17 players from Yorkshire’s Junior Development Squad promoted to play in the Inter County Championships for Yorkshire’s 2nd teams for the first time. Despite having to play the other County 1st teams, all squads made an excellent effort.

GU13 IC 2nd teamThe girls U13 team travelled to Fairways Lodge in Prestwich, Lancashire with a new squad consisting of:

Lexie Ogram (Hull)
Frankie Hartley (Wakefield)
Mei Whattam (Chapel Allerton)
Nancy Colley (Leyburn)

In their first match they lost to the overall winners Lancashire 1/2. Nancy Colley got the team off to an excellent start with a 3/0 win over Charlie McClone and Frankie Hartley made a spirited game with Lucy Gibson
before losing 5/11, 11/3, 9/11, 2/11. This left the teams no 1 Lexie Ogram to play the highly ranked Saran Nohiem and although she made a fight of it she lost 0/3.

In the second match the team faced Warwickshire and Mei Whattam played her first match. She fought hard to have for a 3/0 win against Grace Elson. Frankie Hartley lost 1/3 to Lucia Avery. Lexie Ogram started well only losing a hard fought first game 16/18, 1/11, 4/11.

Despite the two close defeats, spirits were still high as all three players Lexie, Frankie and Mei beat North Wales 3/0 and therefore the team finished in third position. This was an excellent start to the season for such an inexperienced squad.

BU13 IC 2nd teamThe Boys U13 2nd team had a home fixture against the first teams from Cheshire and Merseyside. It was played on the glass backed courts at Selby Squash Club.

The squad comprised of:

Jack Walmsley (Wakefield)
Matthew Wake (Dunnington)
Callum Tomlinson (Beverley)
Rahul Rajgopal (Chapel Allerton)
Joe Royle (Pontefract)

Joe, the Yorkshire Champion at U11 and the youngest player in the squad, got the team off to a quick start beating Cheshire’s no 5 Niall Penny 11/0, 11/4, 11/1 in record time. Rahul was made to work a little harder but came through with a 3/1 win. Both Jack and Matthew had to play the highly ranked Cheshire brothers and both lost. This left Callum to save the day as he won 7/11, 11/6, 11/4, 11/7. This gave the team an impressive 3/2 win over Cheshire. Their second match was against Merseyside and a much easier affair with all players winning 3/0 for maximum points and overall victory in the competition.

BU15 IC 2nd teamThe Boys U15 2nd team took six players to Leicester Squash Club to play the 1st teams of Norfolk, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

Yorkshire Squad:

Louis Cameron (Pocklington)
Connor Watson (Northallerton)
Matthew MacGregor
Sam Davey (Hallamshire)
Jake Tipple (Skelmanthorpe)
Kriss Bedford (Pocklington)

Their 1st match was against Nottinghamshire and they opened their account with wins by Connor 3/1, and 3/0 wins by Matthew, Sam and Jake scoring an impressive 17 points. Their second match against host Leicestershire was a much tougher affair but wins from Connor, Sam and Jake saw them win 3/2 scoring a further 15 points.

The team was now riding high and with a great team spirit they faced favourites Norfolk and with only a few difference between the team, matches were fought hard. Wins from Jake 3/2, Sam 3/0 the team only needed one more win. However Norfolk fought back taking the next two games although Yorkshire’s no 1 Louis clinched a vital point off highly ranked Ross Wilson. With the match now tied a 2 all, Connor probably the coolest player of the day, won 3/0 for Yorkshire to have won all their three matches and be overall winners of stage 1.

The boys U17 2nd team had a more difficult task at The Park, Nottingham with a new squad comprising of:

Matthew Dick (Pocklington)
Thomas Mynett (Pontefract)
Jake Hepworth (Skelmanthorpe)
Maximus Cooke (Chapel Allerton)
Henry Palmer (Pocklington)

Despite their efforts they all lost 3/0 but continue in stage 2 of the competition in a lower section.
