Hallamshire Squash Club, home of three time world champion Nick Matthew, staged the first round of the Northern Cup with the North & East Ridings taking on South & West. 34 players were involved with a small group of players as young as 8 showing their skill under the eagle eye of Regional Coach Neil Guirey. All players played three times in a well organised routine and with players helping each other, making friends as they planned their games accordingly. Some of the East Riding squad hired a mini bus to enable them to arrive fully prepared for the match ahead, so keen was their endeavour to do well.
All matches stopped for the players to have lunch which replicated true match conditions giving everyone a taste of what they can expect in the future. Luke Berzins (Pocklington) captained the N&E squad guiding less experienced players in their games while Joel Gardiner (Hallamshire), captain of the S&W squad rallied his players to victory with 66 points to 51.
Players who impressed were:
N&E – Lloyd Sewell, Bob Giitins, Charlie Palmer, Ben Flower, Louie Mankel, Carys Wilkinson, Callum Mullins and experienced Kriss Bedford, although Lloyd Sewell proved to have the best results.
S&W – George Fearn, Alana Fearn, Elliot Boardwell, George Camp, Josh Payne, Sam Rudd and Sam Wood. Elliot Board won the best player from S&W although 8 year old George Fearn collected the cup for his excellent performance.
Well done to one and all.
