British Open Masters hat-trick for Yorkshire

There was a hat-trick of successes for Yorkshire in the British Open Masters Squash Championships at the Colets Club in Surrey.

Julie Field won the Women’s Over-60 title, beating Sian Johnson from Wales 3/1 in the final at the Thames Ditton club, while her stablemate at Pontefract Squash Club, Andrea Santamaria, had an arguably even more impressive victory.

After overcoming Welsh champion Helen Barnard in the semi-finals, Santamaria had a hard match in the Women’s Over-50 final against the USA champion and multiple previous winner, Hope Prockop, but came out on top in the fifth game.

Yorkshire county secretary and acting chair, Mike Clemson, from Ferriby Hall near Hull, won his fourth British Open Masters title after another hard-fought encounter in the Men’s Over 75 event.

Clemson beat USA champion Gerald Poulton 3-2, after Poulton had beaten the current world over-75s champion, Adrian Wright, in the semi-final.
