There is a new name on the Italik Yorkshire Closed cup after Tom Bamford became champion in a pulsating weekend at Pontefract.
Tom had to do it the hard way, with victories over Brad Gallivan and Lewis Doughty in the early rounds, and no. 1 seed Simon Parke, overcome 3-0, in the semi final. In the final he met last year’s runner-up Taminder Gata-Aura, who had himself beaten the no. 2 seed Alex Hodgetts 3-2 in a gruelling semi final. There was little between the two finallists throughout, but Tom eventually won through 3-2 (11-13, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9) in 48 minutes. Ben Hodgetts beat British Junior Open champion Sam Todd 3-1 in the final of the plate.
In the B event, Wakefield’s Eddy McGuire beat Martin Humphrey. Graham Hawcroft won the plate, beating Dan Hall.
In the Over 40s, Giles Cook beat former England international Jonathan Lilley 3-1, while in the Over 50s Tony Kaye beat Phil Wakefield.
There was a small ladies draw with Pontefract’s Katie Smith taking the title she last won in 2014. Ellen Cooper was runner up.
Many thanks to event supporter Italik, and overall Yorkshire Squash sponsor Allam Marine.
